Step 3: Begin E-Counselling
Email counselling (E-counselling) may be a one time consultation or you may choose to have an ongoing therapeutic email relationship. If you're unsure of where to begin, you can use the following as a guide:
- Describe the current situation or problem. Any examples you have would be helpful.
- Provide some background information. Any information that you think is relevant to this situation and that you feel may help me understand the problem should be included.
- Tell me how you have dealt with it up until today. What have you tried to do about this problem, what has helped and what has not helped.
- Tell what you think and feel about your situation.
- Make a list of your questions for me.
- Your original email.
- I may send you a quick email to ask a few additional questions concerning your situation.
- I will send you a detailed response to your original email.
- Once you have reviewed my response to your original email you may have a question or two. This is your opportunity to ask any questions you may have about my response.
- I will answer any additional questions regarding my response to your original email.
- As you can see, an e-counselling session may only be 2 e-mails (your original e-mail and my response to it) or it may be 5 e-mails which allows for each of us to ask clarifying questions.
