What is E-Counselling?
E-counselling is counselling over the internet using email. While e-counselling is becoming a common method of counselling it does require that you are motivated and willing to examine the specifics of the issue that is causing distress, to experience emotions concerning the issue and to engage in new behaviours to bring about a solution to your issue.
The benefits of E-Counselling include:
· It's fast.
· Easily accessible.
· Cost effective.
· Time efficient.
· A way to access counselling from your own home at a time that works best for you.
· Convenient if you travel or have a hectic life.
· Accessible for those who have difficulty leaving home due to physical limitations.
· Accessible for those who live in rural areas and do not have counselling services in their area.
E-Counselling works well for men and women in a variety of areas such as:
· Personal growth.
· Grief and loss.
· Relationship issues.
· Managing stress.
· Life transitions and career changes.
· Loneliness.
· Communication issues.
Is E-Counselling for me?
While you may want E-Counselling, some issues and (or) situations do not lend themselves well the service. For example, if you need support right away, e-counselling will not meet your needs. E-Counselling is not suitable for everyone or all situations. It is not an effective means of therapy for crisis situations such as:
· Suicidal feelings.
· Homicidal feelings.
· Abuse.
If you are expereinceing any of these crisis situations please:
· Phone Emergency Services or 911
· Visit the nearest hospital
If you are not in crisis, ask yourself the following questions to help you get an idea of whether this might be a good option for you:
· Do you organise your thoughts and express well in writing? Are you comfortable using Skype?
· Am I comfortable using computers? For example, can I easily create an e-mail account using a new, secure program?
· Do I have access to a non-work computer? For privacy reasons it is not recommended to use a work computer.
· Am I 18 years of age or older?
